Has there ever been a more ineffective coaching change in our hockey? Probably not. SCB loses the first two games under its new coach Toni Söderholm. Now it comes to the jobs of coach Raëto Raffainer and sports director Andrew Ebbett. No polemics. A factual analysis.

Is it too soon to criticize a new manager after the first two games? Yes. It’s too soon after the 1:3 against Gottéron and the miserable 1:5 in Lugano. Because the problem is no longer the coach. The SCB has a deeper leadership problem. The two executives responsible for the well-being of the 50 million sports company at the operational level are now up for debate: manager Raëto Raffainer and its sports director Andrew Ebbett.

The culture of excuses at SCB has never been more developed.

At SCB, the sports leadership has been apologizing for everything for two years. The culture of excuses at SCB has never been more developed. Anyone who describes the SCB as the most expensive self-knowledge group in our sport may be malicious, but they are close to the truth. Unforgettable is the grandiose spectacle when the fans were allowed to lecture the players in the booth during the failed last season. All hockey Europe laughed.

Bern is the “hockey city” and will remain so. Coaches, managers and sports directors come and go, SC Bern will stay. After the change of manager, the stadium is filled to the last seat against Gottéron on Saturday for the first time this season. 17,031 women, men and children rush. Everyone is waiting: a new coach! A new beginning! A new SCB!

But it’s just a new trainer. Without a fresh start and without a new SCB. Raëto Raffainer and Andrew Ebbett deliberately avoided urgently needed “culture shock” by changing managers and signed Toni Söderholm, a sympathetic Scandinavian player. They shunned the commotion, the annoyance, the excitement that a hot-headed American would have caused in the gang, in the locker room, and in the community. It is better not to disturb the habits that you have become fond of. It is better to lose harmoniously than to win in confusion.

So there is no change. Just a different name. Without “machine change”. Just a wheel change on the wide and comfortable path of harmony and comfort. So nothing has fundamentally changed on the ice and in the locker room as a result of the coaching change. SCB’s problem is not a lack of talent, a lack of experience, the loss of some players or the game system. This is not a new attack-trigger variant, pre-control or defense reorganization, or realignment of the power play and manpower play.

The culture of performance is lived. not spoken In Bern it is only spoken.

It is about something much more important: refreshing the culture of performance. The SCB was once legendary for this culture of performance. Two years of larifari operations under the direction of anti-authoritarian trainers have caused deep disturbance. It’s fitting that Chris DiDomenico has long had cult status: a player with his will to win, his passion, the intensity of him is as unusual in the self-aware group of SCB as a stoned kickboxer in a yoga class. He showed more passion in the stands during the game against Gottéron than the coaching staff on the boards, and most of the players. He still has one game to go (in Geneva) and he will return to the team against Davos on Saturday.

The culture of performance is lived. not spoken In Bern it is only spoken. The Bernese have become heroes of the mouth. It’s fitting that Tristan Scherwey, once a passionate and relentless champion, is now known for swallows.

Oh, what beautiful words Raëto Raffainer and Andrew Ebbett found this season to talk about unacceptable performances. They still sing psalms about the now fired Johan Lundskog. And how smart can both explain that it just takes time. time for everything Performance and results tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. But not today. So why get upset when the bosses excuse everything? The Bernese have never been friendlier losers.

Not an easy start at the new job: SCB boss Toni Söderholm.Image: cornerstone

Toni Söderholm is a sorcerer’s apprentice like her predecessor Johan Lundskog. No experience running a club team and managing a crisis. He is not the problem. But to reforest the culture of performance, he needs the help of his superiors. Help from Raëto Raffainer and Andrew Ebbett. In sport there is a new opportunity every day. “There’s always a next game,” say the Americans.

Taking into account the special circumstances and the resulting importance of the game, the 1: 5 in Lugano is the absolute sporting low point since the revival in 1986. Luckily there is a new opportunity on Friday in Geneva against the leader Servette. SCB already has the coach, the foreigners, in short, the team that Raëto Raffainer and Andrew Ebbett wanted. You are responsible. There are no more excuses.
