Even Putin’s supporters now call him an idiot.

The withdrawal of Russian troops from Cherson in the Ukraine war has consequences for President Vladimir Putin. His followers make fun of him.

the essentials in brief

  • The Russian army has withdrawn from Kherson.
  • Now the mood seems to be changing even among Russian war advocates.
  • President Putin has been nicknamed “Loser” by his supporters.

More than a week ago, Russian forces withdrew from Cherson under pressure from Ukrainian counteroffensives in the Ukrainian war. Shortly after the reconquest, the Ukrainians raised the national flag in the city. For Volodymyr Zelenskyj it was clear: “We all feel how our victory is approaching!”

And the Ukrainian president might well be right, if one believes the latest developments in the Ukrainian war. According to Russian journalist Mikhail Zygar, the mood in Russia has radically changed since the Kherson withdrawal.

Consequently, even his supporters and the bureaucratic elite have acknowledged that Vladimir Putin “has finally lost.” Nobody believes the Kremlin chief anymore, according to Zygar, citing Moscow sources in Der Spiegel.

Ukrainian war: the “boss” becomes “idiot”

Until recently, top officials, businessmen or propagandists would only have called him “the boss” or “WW” (Putin’s initials: Vladimir Vladimirovich, editor’s note). His new nickname is now “Pynja”, which means something like loser or jerk “and now he’s extremely popular”.

Putin is being compared to former Serbian president Slobodan Milošević, a source close to the Russian presidential administration told the journalist. Milošević eventually had to answer before the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

For Putin, the outlook is likely to be even worse, the official told Zygar: “He was always afraid of showing weakness, but now he has shown it.” And it is obvious to everyone that he is about to die. God willing, he has six months left.”

Do you think Putin will still be the president of Russia in six months?

In the army there is also “great irritation at the whole administration of the occupied territories and the military operation as a whole.” No one is ready yet to “take the lead against Putin, but everyone is waiting for something,” Zygar said.
