Peter Sauber has traveled to Abu Dhabi and crosses his fingers for the Hinwil team there.

Old love and dedication to his former Formula 1 team brought him to Abu Dhabi: Peter Sauber (79), like the whole team, is nervous after failed qualifying. Is the big goal of the season, sixth place in the World Championship, suddenly still in danger?
Alfa-Sauber’s relentless 2022 roller coaster comes to an end on Sunday after 58 laps in the Abu Dhabi desert under the spotlights, thankfully.
After the longest season of all time and 22 races in less than nine months, Formula 1 almost dragged itself on crutches over the last 305 kilometres.
Vettel full of energy
Only standout dropout Sebastian Vettel (35) is apparently still full of energy and drive. He is really looking forward to celebrating his 299th and last GP. And now he has unleashed it again with a 9th starting position (along with Alonso) in the Aston Martin-Mercedes.
Peter Sauber to Blick: “I can only praise Vettel for his great race. In 2007, in Indianapolis, he drove for BMW-Sauber in the very first Formula 1 race! And the former Hinwil boss (until 2015) with a smile: “We can only hope he finishes eighth like he did then!”
Five points ahead for Alfa-Sauber
It’s clear why: If Vettel’s green team wants to reverse the 50:55 points deficit compared to Alfa-Sauber, Aston Martin needs seventh place or places 8 and 9 for Vettel and Stroll. In the event of a tie, Bottas’ 5th place in Barcelona decides in favor of the Swiss team.
If Zhou (15th) and Bottas (18th) finish in the points from behind (as they did recently in Mexico and Brazil), then Hinwil can celebrate their first 6th place in the World Cup in ten years!
At the time, current Red Bull star Sergio Pérez and Japan’s Kamui Kobayashi created this private team sensation. And in 2012, the last Sauber driver stood on the podium at Suzuka. Kobayashi third!
In 2022, Peter Sauber will be the team’s guest of honor for the third time. And the living pet could also help this time. Because in Barcelona and Monza there were World Cup points.
Three more hot duels
It is also about them on three other fronts.
Ferrari starts the race with a 19-point advantage over Mercedes (click here for the World Cup booth). And the second row Reds should save second place in the World Cup against the third row Silver Arrows. Right in front: the bulls Verstappen (7th pole 2022) and Pérez.
Alpine is also 19 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes. The French with the farewell ace Alonso should keep 4th place…
On the other hand, only two points separate Haas-Ferrari (with Schumi’s last race) from the biggest disappointment of 2022, Alpha Tauri-Honda (penultimate in the World Cup).
