US Attorney General appoints special prosecutor for Trump investigation

The investigation into former US President Donald Trump continues.

The US Department of Justice Merrick Garland (70) is using an independent special investigator for the ongoing investigation into former President Donald Trump (76). That’s what Garland announced Friday in a short-notice appearance in Washington. Lawyer Jack Smith, who has worked at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, among other things, will oversee and lead the investigation with immediate effect.

In certain exceptional cases, it is in the public interest to appoint a special lawyer to carry out the investigation independently, he said. In this case, given that Trump has announced a re-election for the presidency and current President Joe Biden (79) has stated his general intention to run again, it is in the public interest to entrust the investigation to an independent investigator.
